Effect profile
β-Myrcene in the cannabis context
β-Myrcene is the most common terpene in cannabis and the sleep terpene of choice. At a score of 2.0 it carries the strongest sedating effect in the set. The mechanism runs through the body's own GABA system, supported by serotonin receptors. Myrcene is also found in hops and mango, and it is the chemical backdrop of many classic indica strains.
Alongside the sleep profile, myrcene shows pain-relieving effects. Anxiety relief, mood, focus and activation are not myrcene effects. It is a clearly sedating terpene.
In cannabis, myrcene is often the dominant terpene, especially in OG Kush, Blue Dream, Grape Ape and Skunk genetics. You recognize it by the earthy, musky aroma with a fruity, hoppy note. High myrcene levels signal a sleep-promoting, calming effect profile.
