Effect profile

Caryophyllene oxide in the cannabis context

Caryophyllene oxide is the oxidation product of β-caryophyllene and forms mainly when cannabis is stored over a longer period. Its pharmacological profile stands on its own: well-documented antifungal activity, plus pain relief and an anti-inflammatory effect as a secondary signal. Caryophyllene oxide is found in pepper, clove oil and stored cannabis.

In the classic effect recommender, caryophyllene oxide plays a supporting role (a score of 0.5 each for pain and inflammation, factored into the extended search). Anxiety relief, sleep, mood, focus and activation are not part of its profile.

In cannabis, caryophyllene oxide is a storage marker more than an actively chosen terpene. You recognize it by the woody, spicy aroma with a faintly oxidized, ripe note. Higher caryophyllene oxide levels signal older or longer-stored material.

Pharmacological notes: Antifungal activity.
